Nathan Shank Ph.D.

Associate Professor of English

Dr. Shank teaches core and upper-level writing courses, including Advanced Writing and Technical Writing. He advises the writing majors and has recently published on both technical communication and cognitive approaches to literature.

Dr. Shank directs the Writer’s Block, OC’s writing center, and is the faculty sponsor for Soundings, OC’s student-produced creative and visual arts journal. He co-leads the Summer Shakespeare Experience study abroad program to Canada with Professor Bingham Brunner. He regularly presents for Oklahoma Humanities’ “Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma!” service program. Dr. Shank cares about engaged and lived pedagogies. His favorite recent quote from V. Jo Hsu states “Only by rendering our beliefs legible—by fixing them temporarily, imperfectly, and vulnerably in some form—can we create the conditions for discussion, negotiation, and change.”

Dr. Shank and his wife Manda have two children, Hannah and Amos. When Manda and Nathan aren’t reading books or cooking together, they are gardening or participating in local cultural events.
