Matt McCook Ph.D.

Professor of History

Dr. McCook is a scholar of America’s religious and intellectual history who has taught at OC since 2002. He teaches a variety of pre-Civil War American history courses, historical methods courses, American Religious History, and the Modern Middle East. His research interests include the Second Great Awakening, religious and social reform, Faiths of America’s Founders, and historiography. He has published a chapter in Religion and the State and presents papers regularly at the Conference on Faith and History and the Conference on Religion and the State. He has also presented papers at the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Studies Association. Dr. McCook has twice been awarded OC’s Faith and Learning award and he enjoys working with future social studies teachers.

Dr. McCook enjoys writing parodies, playing guitar, golf, and basketball and traveling with his wife, Alyssa, and their three children: Collin, Katie, and Jackson. Dr. McCook is a deacon and Bible class teacher at Memorial Road Church of Christ.
