Alumni Update - Dr. Jim Bond

Jim Bond

You might know Dr. James Bond ('91) from the Oklahoma Readers Choice Award for best orthopedic surgeon from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Or from being recognized by Oklahoma Magazine for being named a top doctor in 2017-2019. However, many do not know that Jim Bond came to Oklahoma Christian to play basketball and pursue a degree in English. However, his priorities dramatically changed his senior year when his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Jim will tell you that he loves the game of basketball, but his mother's illness reframed his context, and it was that difficult season of walking with her that changed the trajectory of the rest of his life.

After graduating from OC, Jim wasn't finding fulfillment in his graduate work, so he reconsidered his life's path and decided to pursue medicine. Because of his English undergraduate degree, there were skeptical voices that challenged him as a medical school candidate. But those voices fueled the competitive fire in Jim, and they were quieted as he finished #1 in his class at OU in 2000. This accomplishment allowed him to create his own path and pursue his love of orthopedic sports medicine.

Fast forward through 23 years of heightened recognition and success, and you will find a very humble Jim Bond who attributes these blessings to God and the support of his wife, the love of his life, Sue. He fondly remembers the life lessons he received from his mother, and his faith journey at OC: "Prayer strengthens you, gives you peace, and invites God's spirit into you. Find out what He has in store for you and have the courage to embrace it!"
