Trauma Informed Family Support Certificate

Your three courses are self-paced to offer you the flexibility to fit learning within your schedule. Each course is designed to be accessed independently, but you may have questions along the way. Instructors are available to interact with you in the online learning platform.

Students applying to the Trauma Informed Family Support certificate program will be required to possess a bachelor's degree and submit a college transcript.

Persons with special learning equipment needs can work with the university Student Success office to ensure successful completion of the courses.

Those completing a Certificate in Trauma Informed Family support will develop knowledge and role-appropriate skills to:

  • Promote trauma awareness and understanding
  • Lead family life education
  • Recognize trauma-related behaviors that originate from adapting to traumatic experiences
  • Minimize the risk of re-traumatization or triggering trauma dynamics
  • Promote resilience through implementing strengths-focused strategies
  • Foster trauma-resistant skills
  • Avoid compassion fatigue and promote self-care

Family Trauma & Resilience

Course 1

This course equips the scholar with an introductory exploration of the psychological trauma field, as well as the exploration of the professional’s response to trauma.

Basic Therapy Skills

Course 2

This course equips the scholar with skills to create and sustain a therapeutic presence with persons who need to be heard. Crucial conversations are often required for leaders in all disciplines, regardless of their professional area or culture. This course leads the scholar through the process of the beginnings, middles and ends of these conversations; and how to help someone seek clinical help if needed. Trauma-informed attributes are included across this ten-lesson course, and resources for more study are included in each component.

Parent & Relationship Education

Course 3

This course equips the scholar with skills and techniques essential for family life educators and human science professionals. The course will lead the scholar through the basic processes of family life educational programs and techniques of family life educators who will be working with individuals and families across a variety of settings to enhance preventative strategies addressing key issues of development and human relationships at each stage of the family life cycle. Trauma informed attributes are included across the this ten-lesson course, and resources for more study are included in each component.
