Are you a working professional?

Earn college credit for your work experience

Have you had professional training or spent significant time learning your industry? Have you had significant learning experiences in your field or a particular subject area as an adult? If so, you may qualify for Credit for Prior Learning and be able to be awarded college credit for your prior learning experiences and accelerate your degree program.

One prevailing method for awarding college credit for prior learning is portfolio-based assessment. This method is available to adult learners who can demonstrate that they have previously acquired the knowledge and skills of specific courses in their degree programs.

OC offers multiple pathways for adult learners to build and submit portfolios that demonstrate mastery of their already acquired college-level knowledge. Students can take a portfolio writing course, where the course itself counts as elective credit and students receive step-by-step guidance from an instructor. Another option is a writing workshop, where students can review materials on how to compose a portfolio and develop one or more on their own.

If you are an adult learner and would like to find out if you are eligible to earn credit for your prior learning, you can create a prior learning profile by completing this brief form. The process to submit your profile is quick and simple. Once you have completed your profile, an advisor will reach out to you to walk you through the next steps.

Have you earned a license, certification, or other formal credential through a standardized exam or intensive training? If so, you may be eligible to receive college credit through Credit for Prior Learning. Many credentials earned through rigorous, validated assessments align with college-level coursework and can provide you with a more direct path to degree completion.

OC recognizes certain credentials that meet established standards for content, rigor, and assessment, such as National Board Certification in education. Students who hold qualified credentials may be awarded credit through a more direct review process. This process begins by submitting documentation of your credential, which will be reviewed to determine its alignment with specific course outcomes.
