The Thrive Initiative is designed to inform nurturing parents and families.

When family science professionals at Penn State University were seeking experts in helping develop positive strategies for military families with children with disabilities, Oklahoma Christian University’s Bobby Kern was who they turned to.

Kern, an associate professor of Family Science at OC, served as the Subject Matter Expert in a new Penn State University Thrive program specifically made for military families with children with developmental disabilities. The free, supplemental module is two hours long with practical information and strategies for parents and families who are providing care for a child with a disability. It will be available soon on the Thrive website at no cost to military and civilian families.

PSU’s Thrive Initiative is part of the university’s Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness, which is funded in part by the Department of Defense. Thrive seeks to empower parents as they nurture their children from birth until the age of 18.

Tina Winn, chair of OC's Division of Behavioral and Social Science, commended Kern on the program.

"Congratulations to Bobby," she said. "I reviewed the resource and am very impressed. This is excellent work and a much-needed resource."

Kern, whose son, Josiah, has down syndrome, commented on his experiences with the program’s development.

“This was a very rewarding experience for me that I hope leads to more educational opportunities for families who have a child with a disability,” he said. “Thank you to [everyone at OC] at every level of leadership for encouraging me as both a professional and as Josiah's father. I hope this work makes OC proud."

Those who know Kern recognize his passion to help others and his valuable experience he brings to the table. OC President John deSteiguer expressed his admiration for Kern’s work.

"Congratulations Bobby on the recognition of not only your education expertise but also your wisdom and knowledge as a father," deSteiguer said.
