For 3rd time in as many races, Diaz takes Heartland XC award
OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 30, 2013) – For the third time in as many races this season, Oklahoma Christian’s Roberto Diaz was named Monday as the Heartland Conference men’s cross country runner of the week.
Running in the upper (University) division of the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday, Diaz overcame cool, wet conditions and a lightning delay of 2 1/2 hours to post a strong fourth-place finish among non-Division I runners in one of the nation's elite cross country events.
Diaz, a junior from Austin, Texas, finished the 8,000-meter race in 25:55.52, leading the Eagles to a third-place team finish among the five non-NCAA Division I squads competing in the University Division.
Diaz also won the conference award after the Strohman Dental/Midwestern State Stampede and the Missouri Southern Stampede earlier this season.
It’s the fourth time in his career Diaz has been named as the conference’s runner of the week, as he also won the award once as a sophomore. Since joining the Heartland before the 2012 season, OC runners are 8-for-8 in winning runner-of-the-week honors.
