Karen Sorensen

Karen Sue (McKenzie) Sorensen was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and grew up in Dearborn, Michigan. She has one younger sister. She lived in Dearborn, MI, until she went away to college at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tennessee.  In her junior year she met her husband at the West End Church of Christ who was in graduate school at Vanderbilt University.  They married following both of their graduations in 1985 and moved to Dallas, Texas, where they lived for one year. Karen taught 5th grade in the Dallas schools.  Then, following a job change for Dan, they moved to Michigan where she was a substitute teacher.  One year later, in 1987, Dan accepted a transfer with his company to Vilseck, West Germany.  Karen and Dan lived in Germany for three years.  During the first two years in Germany, Karen taught 5th grade at the elementary school on an army base for the 7th Army Training Command (Dan was working for General Dynamic, a defense contractor of the M1A1 Abrams Tank). While living in Germany Karen once got to drive a tank and said it was a blast!

Near the end of their time in Germany, their daughter Rachel was born on April 1, 1990. They moved back to Michigan when Rachel was four months old and bought their first house in Clawson, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit).  They lived in the Detroit area for the next 21 years in Clawson, Troy and Saline.  They worshipped with the Clawson Church of Christ, Heritage Church of Christ, Ann Arbor Church of Christ and the Plymouth Church of Christ.

In 1993 Karen’s second daughter Heidi was born in the same hospital she was born!  During those years, when the girls were small, Karen was a stay at home mom.  When both girls were in school full time, she went back to being a substitute teacher.  In 2006 Dan made a major career move and began teaching accounting at Rochester College and Karen went to work full-time at Chrysler headquarters in the legal department.

In 2011 Dan was offered a position at Oklahoma Christian University.  He accepted the position and they moved in July of 2011. Karen began working at OC as an Executive Assistant in August 2011. When they moved to Oklahoma, Rachel was about to start her senior year at Rochester College and Heidi had just graduated high school and was headed to Lipscomb University.  In 2012 Rachel married Brett Wilkewitz and they continue to live in Belleville, Michigan with their two cats and puppy. Rachel is in graduate school for Physical Therapy at Wayne State University and will graduate in December 2016. Rachel’s husband Brett is a manager with Hertz Rental Cars at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.  Heidi is pursuing a degree in Nursing at Lipscomb and will graduate in May 2016.  Dan and Karen are members at Memorial Road Church of Christ.

In her spare time Karen enjoys crafting – particularly rubber stamping and jewelry making. She also enjoys reading historical fiction and baking (especially if someone else will clean up her mess). Karen would love to visit Australia someday. When asked what brings her the most joy, she said “my children.”
