I’m from Lovington, New Mexico and graduated from Oklahoma Christian University.
Favorite OC Professor- Can I have TWO? Because I do.
One was Dr. Philip Patterson. He taught the majority of my upper level courses, and was the kind of teacher who didn’t just hand out compliments. Because of that, getting any kind of praise or “good job” from him was one of the greatest feelings. He made his students earn those; which made me work a lot harder to do my best ALL of the time.
The other was Dr. Willie Steele. I only had one class with him in my four years and I count him responsible for making me love to read. I think he only assigned us books that he really enjoyed himself; that made it so easy to respect and learn from someone who truly valued what they were teaching. One day, I think I was so intently listening to him that he stopped speaking and said, “Staring contest. Go.” The whole class looked up from their laptops and watched us. I blinked first, and without skipping a beat, he went right back to his lecture on Mark Twain!
Favorite OC Memory-
Easy: being the Program Assistant for Coach Hays and the Men’s basketball team. Even though countless hours were dedicated to filling water bottles, and washing sweaty jerseys- I had the privilege of being a tiny part of a legendary program, traveling with a herd of body guards and brothers, watching the sport I loved, and creating some of the best relationships and memories that I could have asked for in my college experience. Does that count as my ‘favorite memory?’ I guess that’s really more like a million in one, huh?
