We believe honoring the past, marked by God's abundant blessings, is essential for a promising future. The university stands as a living testament to the countless individuals — faculty, staff, students, donors, community leaders, trustees and friends — whose faith-filled endeavors, guided by God’s hand, have shaped it into the vibrant Kingdom University it is today. From the initial inspiration to establish a Christ-centered school to the subsequent relocation to Oklahoma City and the construction of this beautiful campus, God's divine providence is evident. As we gather to honor this rich history, we express our profound gratitude to the visionary individuals whose dreams and unwavering faith laid the foundation for Oklahoma Christian University. With hearts full of thanksgiving for the past, we eagerly anticipate the exciting chapters God will write in our future.
Guided by Faith, Fueled by Vision
Oklahoma Christian University: A 75-Year Journey
-
In September 1950, Central Christian College opened its doors in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, welcoming around 90 pioneering students and faculty. The college initially resided in a converted mansion with additional classrooms and a dormitory. Despite the modest beginnings, the college attracted talented faculty and students who believed in its potential. This strong foundation would pave the way for future growth and transformation.
-
Outgrowing its initial location, Central Christian College sought a larger city environment in 1956. Oklahoma City's leadership readily offered support, including land acquisition assistance. A strategically chosen 200-acre site near Eastern and Memorial Road provided ample space for expansion. Renowned architects designed a functional campus layout with dedicated zones for academics, living quarters and essential facilities. Despite a delayed groundbreaking ceremony due to weather, construction commenced in 1957, paving the way for a new chapter in Oklahoma City.
-
In summer 1958, the college transitioned to its new Oklahoma City campus. While construction neared completion on academic buildings, a cafeteria and dorms, unforeseen delays pushed back the start of the school year. Faculty and staff secured temporary housing and offices. Essential equipment and furniture were transported by truck. Despite a lack of landscaping and a partially complete cafeteria, Sept. 22 marked a significant turning point - the official opening of the Oklahoma City campus.
-
Following the move to Oklahoma City, a pivotal decision was made to expand the curriculum and offer bachelor's degrees. This broadened the academic scope beyond a two-year program. To reflect this growth and solidify its location, the college's name officially changed to Oklahoma Christian College in 1962. The new name emphasized the college's Christian identity and Oklahoma roots.
-
Oklahoma Christian College underwent a remarkable transformation from 1966 to 1980. The campus flourished with new buildings, reflecting the college's expanding academic and extracurricular offerings. In 1966, Wilson Halls A and B were dedicated in honor of the college's founding president, and the Mabee Learning Center debuted, making a national splash with its innovative use of dial-access audio recordings for student learning. Gunn Henderson Hall followed in 1967, named after its generous benefactors. The Davisson American Heritage Building, funded by a gift from William Guy Davisson, opened in 1970 as a testament to American values and education. Herold Science Hall was dedicated in 1971, keeping pace with the college's growing academic programs. The decade culminated in a flurry of construction in 1980. The Harvey Business Center, made possible by a major gift from Ralph and Maxine Harvey, provided classrooms, computer labs and office space for the thriving business program. That same year, the W.T. Payne Natatorium opened its doors, offering an Olympic-size swimming pool funded by Oklahoma City businessman W.T. Payne. This period of physical growth solidified Oklahoma Christian College as a premier institution.
-
In June 1990, Oklahoma Christian College reached a significant milestone — achieving university status. This recognition revealed the college's remarkable growth in academic scope and offerings since its founding in 1950. The transition to university status solidified Oklahoma Christian's position as a leading higher learning institution committed to academic excellence and a Christ-centered education.
-
Oklahoma Christian University's 75-year journey is a testament to God's purpose at work. From a humble beginning in 1950 to a thriving university campus today, OC has consistently strove to educate, mentor and inspire learners to fulfill their God-given potential.
The themes woven throughout our history — a pioneering spirit, a commitment to Christ-centered academic excellence and a focus on serving a larger community — continue to guide us as we look toward the future. As a Kingdom University, we believe in integrating faith and learning, preparing graduates to be leaders who make a positive impact on the world.
The story of Oklahoma Christian University is far from over. We are excited to see what the next chapter holds, building upon our rich legacy and fulfilling God's purpose for generations to come.
