Oklahoma Christian honors life-saving alum

By Wes McKinzie

Julie Flegal-Smallwood returned home to a standing ovation at Oklahoma Christian University after saving the life of a child in Paris.

OC president John deSteiguer presented Julie, a 1985 Oklahoma Christian graduate, with the President’s Medal of Distinction at the university’s April 14 Chapel service.

OC created the award two years ago to honor alumni who perform life-saving acts of heroism and service. The first recipients were Kevin Hixson, Cindy Lowe and Jennifer Simonds, teachers who shielded their students from harm as a 2013 tornado destroyed the Briarwood and Plaza Towers elementary schools in Moore.

Julie is a professor at nearby Redlands Community College. She was in France training to take Redlands students on an upcoming mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

At the Charles De Gaulle Airport for her flight home from Paris, Julie saw 5-year-old Jean Luc LeBeouff lifeless and not breathing after he had mistaken cough syrup for juice in his mother’s bag and drank it.

She immediately began CPR on the boy until he came to. French authorities said Julie saved Jean Luc’s life.

Earlier this year, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education presented Julie with a citation from the Oklahoma State Senate.
