Zuercher wins 5,000 on opening day of Missouri Southern meet

JOPLIN, Mo. (Jan. 10, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian sophomore Timothy Zuercher took top honors in the 5,000 meters and senior Larry Brown finished fourth in the weight throw to highlight the Eagles’ performances on the opening day of the Missouri Southern Indoor Invitational on Friday.

With Zuercher and Trent Stephens running, OC comprised half of the field for the 5,000 and Zuercher prevailed in a duel with Eli Ybarra of Cowley County (Kan.), winning in 16:30.22, while Stephens was fourth in 18:00.39.

Brown, who opened his indoor season last month by winning the weight throw in the Oklahoma Baptist Indoor-Outdoor Invitational, had another strong showing, taking fourth among 15 competitors with a mark of 50 feet, 4¾ inches (15.36 meters).

Jamal George led OC runners in two sprint events, taking 13th among 22 runners in the 60-meter dash preliminaries in 7.30 seconds and 10th among 23 runners in the 200-meter dash in 23.60 seconds. Also in the 200, OC’s Joshua Jones was 12th in 23.87 seconds, Trenton Parker was 17th in 24.46 seconds and Keegan Palmer was 19th in 24.87 seconds.

Sophomore Austin Wallace, a multi-event competitor for OC, was sixth in the 60-meter hurdle premilinaries in 8.84 seconds, qualifying for the finals, and 13th (among 14) in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, ¾ inch (5.81 meters). OC assistant coach Phillip Dale, participating unattached, was seventh with a mark of 21 feet, 3¼ inches (6.48 meters).

The meet will continue on Saturday.
