OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 8, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian women’s cross country runner Layne Hammer has been named as the National Christian College Athletic Association’s student-athlete of the week for her sport.

The NCCAA announced the honor on Tuesday. Hammer, a freshman from Greeley, Colo., was recognized for her performance in the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.

In soggy, muddy conditions, Hammer finished the 5,000-meter race on a wet course in 19:31.3, good for 49th among the 203 women in the college division. It was the fourth time in as many races this season that she’s been the top finisher for the Lady Eagles.

Hammer is the first OC women’s runner to win the NCCAA honor this season. Last year, current OC sophomore Tara Lewis also received the weekly award from the NCCAA once.
