OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 12, 2013) – A win over one of the best women’s tennis players in NCAA Division II typically garners attention, and that’s certainly been the case for Oklahoma Christian’s Barbora Bozkova.
Bozkova received her second honor in as many days on Tuesday when the National Christian College Athletic Association named her as its student-athlete of the week. On Monday, the Heartland Conference chose the junior from Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, as its player of the week.
Bozkova, ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division II singles, beat No. 5-ranked Julia Mongin of Abilene Christian (Texas) 6-1, 6-7, 10-5 on Saturday, avenging a loss to Mongin in the Division II South Central Regional title match last fall. Mongin is a three-time regional single champion.
Bozkova provided the Lady Eagles’ only team point in an 8-1 loss at No. 3-ranked ACU.
In singles action on Friday, she also breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Lauren Renner of McMurry (Texas) in the season opener and a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mackenzie Knoop, the No. 1 player for Trinity (Texas), which is ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division III. OC beat McMurry 8-1 and Trinity 7-2.
She and doubles partner Angie Torres Quezada won their doubles matches against both McMurry and Trinity. Bozkova's only loss last week came when she and Torres Quezada fell 8-5 to Mongin and Brittney Reed of ACU, the fifth-ranked duo in Division II.
Bozkova was one of three OC student-athletes to receive NCCAA student-athlete of the week honors on Tuesday, joining men’s tennis player Nicolas Auruccio and softball player Kendra Pierce.
During the 2012-13 school year, 14 OC student-athletes in 11 sports have combined to win NCCAA weekly honors 18 times.
