Oklahoma Christian University’s first graduating class of computer science graduate students recently received their diplomas.

Thirty-seven students earned their Master of Science in Computer Science degree in just one year. David North, OC’s Director of Computer Science Advancement, said the class is the first of many to come.

“We are proud of our first group who finished our masters program in one year,” North said. “Our graduate degree and night classes, which are geared toward working adults, have been a great fit with these graduates and the new students we are attracting.”

OC also offers a flexible graduate program that can be completed in one or two years with most of the courses offered in the evening. The evening program has been popular among software engineers working at Tinker Air Force Base. That cohort is expected to graduate next summer along with the newest group of students in the one-year program. OC’s current graduate computer science enrollment includes 76 students from the United States, India, Pakistan and Rwanda.

Yamlakfekad Eyerusalem, who works at Tinker Air Force Base, was pleased with his experience in OC’s graduate program.

“The computer science curriculum gives students a broad exposure to the subject matter in the field,” Eyerusalem said. “The professors are experts in their fields, highly regarded and take their jobs seriously. I was able to get a job before I graduated.”

Housed in the university’s Graduate School of Engineering and Computer Science, OC’s Master of Science in Computer Science is one of the most affordable MSCS programs in the state. Nationally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the MSCS program features a software engineering track, with future tracks in development.

Oklahoma Christian also offers a BS/MS option that allows aspiring professionals to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science in just five years.

The MSCS program builds on the growth of OC’s undergraduate programs in the field, which focus on new, popular technologies and feature degree tracks in Computer Science, Computer Science with Business, and Computer Science with Gaming and Animation.

Computer science is one of the most lucrative and fastest-growing job fields. CNN, Money Magazine, and U.S. News and World Report list multiple computer science professions – including computer systems analysis, database development, information security analysis, software architecture, software development, and video game design – among the nation’s top 10 jobs in salary and availability.
