NCCAA men’s golf honor goes to OC’s Johnston for 2nd time
OKLAHOMA CITY (March 12, 2013) – For the second time this academic year, Oklahoma Christian’s Sam Johnston has been named as the National Christian College Athletic Association men’s golf student-athlete of the week.
Johnston, a freshman from San Diego, was honored Tuesday for his sixth-place individual finish last week in The Contender tournament at TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas, Texas.
Johnston led OC to a second-place finish in the tournament, played on the course that annually hosts the PGA Tour's Byron Nelson Championship. He played steady golf on a warm Monday, shooting an even-par 71, followed by a 4-over 75, on the 7,166-yard course.
When temperatures turned cooler and the winds picked up considerably Tuesday, his score didn't rise as much as those of other players in the field and his 79 allowed him to move up in the top 10 of the 14-team, 75-player event.
Johnston also took NCCAA honors during a week in mid-September.
He’s one of three OC golfers to win the NCCAA honor this academic year, joining Vilhelm Bogstrand and Logan Herbst. Herbst received the award last week.
Johnston was one of a record four OC student-athletes to receive an NCCAA student-athlete of the week honor Tuesday, joining Morgan Dockery (women’s golf), Katy O’Steen (women’s basketball) and Will Reinke (men’s basketball).
