Lady Eagles upset 5-4 at St. Thomas
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 19, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian suffered a pair of shocking losses in both doubles and singles and dropped a 5-4 decision at NAIA No. 19-ranked St. Thomas (Fla.) on Tuesday.
The loss was the second straight for OC (7-3), the first time the Lady Eagles have dropped consecutive matches this season. St. Thomas improved to 5-4.
OC fell behind 2-1 in doubles play, losing a pair of close matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. At No. 1, OC’s Barbora Bozkova and Gisela Castany lost 8-6 to Tetiana Kovalska and Gabriella Bongiovanni, and at No. 3, St. Thomas’ Lauren Lightfoot and Brigitte Bustamante downed Angie Torres Quezada and Rebeca Aguilar Dominguez 8-6.
OC’s No. 2 duo of Maryfer Abreu Roman and Gabriela Carrillo won by forfeit.
The upsets continued in singles play for the Bobcats. At No. 1, Kovalska stunned NCAA Division II No. 20-ranked Bozkova 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 2, Bongiovanni knocked off Castany 6-2, 6-1. St. Thomas also won at No. 6 singles, with Bustamante beating Aguilar Dominguez 6-0, 6-2.
Abreu Roman won at No. 3, beating Monica Rekkedal 6-1, 7-5. At No. 4, Carrillo beat Ashley Ahern 6-1, 6-1, and Torres Quezada prevailed at No. 5, downing Lightfoot 6-2, 6-0.
