TYLER, Texas (Feb. 9, 2013) – Texas-Tyler posted wins in four singles matches, lifting the Patriots to a 5-4 win over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, ending OC’s 15-match winning streak.
OC (2-1) hadn’t lost since falling to Embry-Riddle (Fla.) last March 21.The streak, which included the Eagles’ run to last season’s NAIA title, was the third-longest in the OC program’s storied history, behind a 17-game streak spanning the 1997 and 1998 seasons and a 20-game streak spanning the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
In the decisive match Saturday, Texas-Tyler’s Ryan Spencer edged Paulo Roessle 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 4 position.
OC took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, but the Eagles’ top duo, Martin Poboril and Bruno Tiberti, fell to Ryan Ybarra and Daniel Brown 9-7. The Eagles won the other two matches. At No. 2, Julio Pulido and Nicolas Auruccio beat Texas-Tyler’s Kevin Singer and Ryan Spencer 8-5, while OC’s Paulo Roessle and Josip Smoljan beat Jonathon Karsten and Matt Moreman 8-2 at No. 3.
The Eagles couldn’t sustain their momentum in singles play, though, and Texas-Tyler (2-0) took advantage. Ybarra, ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division III singles, beat Division II No. 33 Poboril 6-2, 6-3, and Brown swept Division II No. 41 Tiberti 6-4, 6-4. At No. 3, Texas-Tyler’s Ramon Martinez downed Smoljan 6-3, 6-1.
OC won at No. 5 singles, with Pulido beating Singer 6-2, 6-3 and at No. 6 singles, with Auruccio beating Karsten 6-3, 6-0.
