Eagles top juco power Tyler 6-3 in exhibition match
TYLER, Texas (Feb. 8, 2013) – The bottom portion of Oklahoma Christian’s singles lineup led the Eagles to a 6-3 exhibition win on Friday at Tyler (Texas) Junior College.
The Eagles’ No. 3, 5 and 6 singles players – Josip Smoljan, Paulo Roessle and Julio Pulido, respectively – each posted straight-sets wins to clinch the match after OC swept the three doubles matches against the Apaches, traditionally one of the top juco programs in the nation.
Smoljan beat Jacob Rother 6-3, 7-5, Roessle beat Mitch Martell 6-3, 6-1 and Pulido beat George Rivers 6-2, 6-3. The Apaches took the other three singles matches, with Adrien Berkowicz downing Bruno Tiberti 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1, Tassilo Schmidt beating Martin Poboril 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and James Martell beating Nicolas Auruccio 6-1, 6-7, 10-4 at No. 4.
In the doubles matches, Tiberti and Poboril beat Mitch Martell and Berkowicz 8-6 at No. 1, Auruccio and Pulido beat Schmidt and James Martell 8-5 at No. 2 and Smoljan and Roessle beat Dillon Eizember and Rother 8-6.
It was the second exhibition match between OC and Tyler in as many weeks. The Eagles also won the first match, 7-2.
The Eagles will play at NCAA Division II Texas-Tyler on Saturday.
