PALM DESERT, Calif. (March 31, 2014) – After a pair of disappointing finishes to open the spring golf season, Oklahoma Christian is back contending for a tournament title.
With four players among the top seven, OC held a one-shot lead over Colorado Christian in what turned into a two-team race on the opening day of the Dr. Troy Bledsoe Skyhawk Classic Club Shootout on Monday.
OC posted team rounds of 303 and 310 on the par-72, 6,896-yard course at The Classic Club and the Eagles’ team score of 613 was one shot better than Colorado Christian. The next-closest squad in the six-team field, Colorado Mesa, was 42 shots behind OC and tournament host Fort Lewis (Colo.) was fourth, another eight shots back.
OC sophomore Sam Johnston shot rounds of 72 and 75 and stood at 3-over-par 147, one shot ahead of Minkyu Jeon of Colorado Christian and two shots ahead of CCU’s Andrew Kennedy in what looked to be a three-man race for medalist honors.
In fourth was OC senior Johnny Ellis, who posted rounds of 75 and 78 and was at 153. Three shots behind Ellis, tied for fifth, was OC’s Trey Payne, who had rounds of 79 and 77. Another OC player, Alasdair Dalgliesh, was seventh in the 34-man field at 159 after shooting a 77 and an 82.
OC’s No. 5 player, freshman Ryan Evans, was tied for 25th at 171, shooting a 91 in the opening round before improving 11 shots and firing a second-round 80.
The final round will be played on Tuesday.
