NEW YORK (Feb. 28, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian dropped out of the first Golf World/Nike Golf Division II College Coaches’ Poll of the spring season, but not far.
OC finished 29th in the balloting for the poll, which closed last Friday, before the Eagles finished second in their opening tournament of the spring, the San Antonio Shoot-Out at TPC San Antonio’s Canyons Course. The poll was released Thursday.
The Eagles had risen as high as No. 10 in the poll during the fall season.
OC is in the first year of the NCAA Division II membership process and coach David Lynn said many Division II coaches who vote in the poll aren’t familiar with OC’s considerable success at the NAIA level, which includes two national championships. OC also won the National Christian College Athletic Association title last fall.
Barry (Fla.) moved into the No. 1 position in the current Division II poll. OC’s Heartland Conference rival, Newman (Kan.), was No. 25. Two other Heartland programs, St. Edward’s (Texas) and St. Mary’s (Texas), also received votes but didn’t crack the top 25.
