OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 9, 2013) – Thanks to Roberto Diaz, the Oklahoma Christian men’s cross country team is picking up in 2013 where it left off last year when it comes to in-season Heartland Conference awards.
On Monday, Diaz was named as the conference’s initial runner of the week, honoring his second-place finish in the season-opening Strohman Dental/Midwestern State Stampede in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Diaz, a sophomore from Austin, Texas, posted a time of 19:15 in the six-kilometer race last Thursday, leading OC to the team win over a pair of squads that were conference champions or co-champions last year – East Central (Great American) and Dallas Baptist (Heartland).
Last year, OC cross country runners won all five Heartland Conference runner-of-the-week honors for which the Eagles were eligible. Diaz and current senior Nick Stoots each won one weekly conference honor, while then-senior Geoffrey Njonjo won three times.
