Dennis, Cowan pace Lady Eagles at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. (Jan. 11, 2013) – Sprinters Andrea Dennis and Maegan Cowan recorded top-11 finishes in the 200 meters on Friday on the first day of the Missouri Southern Open Invitational, the opening meet of Oklahoma Christian’s indoor track season.

Five Lady Eagles competed in the 200, with Dennis eighth in 27.02 seconds and Cowan 11th in 27.24. Dennis and Cowan comprised half of OC’s record-setting 4x400-meter relay team in 2012.

The newest member of that relay team, freshman Rebecca Bloodworth, finished 20th among the 40 competitors in the event in 27.95. The fourth member of the relay team, Somer Helms, was 29th in 28.55 and OC’s Wilmena Gley was 38th in 29.33.

Bloodworth, Helms and Gley also raced in the 60 meters, with Bloodworth 17th among the 28 competitors in 8.44 seconds. Helms was 22nd in 8.70 seconds and Gley 24th in 8.74 seconds. OC’s Kayla Johnston finished 26th in 9.10 seconds.

In field events, OC sophomore Katie Ostlund was 12th in the weight throw with a mark of 38 feet, 5½ inches (11.72 meters).

The meet will continue on Saturday.
