Getting Started with OC's Distance Learning Technologies

Welcome to Oklahoma Christian University Distance Learning. On this page you can find technology requirements for our online courses, as well as quick start information to get you off and running in your course. If you have questions or difficulty, feel free to contact the OC Helpdesk - http://helpdesk.oc.edu.

Basic Computer Requirements

• PC: Windows 2000, XP, or Vista (a Pentium or equivalent processor with 512MB RAM)
• Macintosh: Operating system 10.0 or better
• A local area network (LAN) connection to DSL, Cable or similar high speed service
  (Note: Dial-up is will not meet the performance requirements of this program)

Internet Browser

• Firefox 1.5 or higher
• Internet Explorer 6.0 (Note: IE is no longer supported for Mac)

Online Course Specific Requirements (Note: Not all courses will make use of all software)

• A High-speed Internet Connection (DSL, Cable, or similar broadband connection)
• A sound card and speakers
• RealPlayer 10 (Free version)
• QuickTime 7
• Windows Media Player 10 or 11
• Adobe Flash Player 9
• Virus Protection Software
• Up-to-date virus protection software and Operating System Patches
  (Note: If using McAfee virus protection, it must be disabled to post to Blackboard discussion forums)

Other Software

• An email account (Note: Ensure mail from OC is not automatically blocked)

• Word processing software
• Some classes may have specific requirements for additional software. These requirements will be listed in the course syllabus

Getting Started With Blackboard

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is an on-line virtual classroom. It allows instructors to administer tests and quizzes, post grades and lecture notes, and host discussion boards. Through Blackboard, students are able to contact their instructors and classmates, keep a calendar, and maintain an address book.

Note: Not all instructors use Blackboard. Contact your instructor if you are unsure of the availability of a course.

Who has access?

Blackboard is available to anyone with an OC Network Account and is activated immediately following the activation of your OC Network Account. Access to individual courses taught using Blackboard also requires registration in the course. Course access for students is available ten days before the term begins. Some course material is available for preview if the instructor has allowed preview access.

 

Using Blackboard:

To use Blackboard, you must first sign up for an OC account at http://www.oc.edu/itservices. Once you have created an OCID account, you can log into Blackboard at http://my.oc.edu  using your OCID username and password.

Once you have successfully logged in, you will see a listing of courses available to you on the right hand side under "My Courses." Click on any of these courses to enter the course. Inside the course, you will see options on the left hand side of the screen. These options will allow you to navigate through the course.
