The Tulsey Town Waltz

Tulsa Hotel ImageTulsa, once known as "the oil capital of the nation," was known in its earliest days as "Tulsey Town." It began with the famous well, the Nellie Johnstone No. 1, drilled on April 15, 1897 on the south bank of the Caney River. It was the first commercial oil well in Indian Territory. But life was not all work in Tulsey Town. Community dances were an essential social activity in early Oklahoma. Square dances attracted the hard-working people for a few minutes of fun, and formal balls were a favorite of the wealthy upper class. Many a budding romance came from these special events.
