Former WorldCom controller David Myers was the guest speaker at the 2014 Millican Ethics Symposium on Tuesday, October 28 at Oklahoma Christian University. His message was titled “The Slippery Slope: Learning from Someone Else’s Mistakes.”
In 2005, Myers pled guilty to felony charges and served one year in prison. He admitted to instructing WorldCom’s accounting department to make billions of dollars in adjustments to financial statements so the company could meet Wall Street expectations.
He was spared a longer prison sentence because of his cooperation with the government and his early admission of responsibility and remorse. Myers told the presiding judge he would regret his conduct for the rest of his life.
“At the time I consider to be the single most critical character-defining moment of my life, I failed,” he said.
