PR students from OC travel to Austin for national conference

Oct 12, 2018

OC’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter traveled to the 2018 PRSSA National Conference on Oct. 5-9 to network and learn about the latest practices in the industry. OC brought more students than any other college in Oklahoma; in fact, OC brought as many students as all other colleges combined. This year’s conference theme was “The Art of PR,” which explored the many branches of PR as well as new and traditional techniques for the field.

The PRSSA national conference is the largest gathering of public relations students in the world. It provides a great opportunity for students to network with some of the country’s most well-known PR professionals. Students also had the chance to attend various professional development workshops.

Professor Josh Watson accompanied seven OC students to Austin, Texas with hopes to learn from accomplished individuals in the PR industry.

“I am so proud of the work these students did to raise funds and cover the cost of the trip,” Watson said. “They invested in their future careers, and they had a lot of fun, too.”

OC PRSSA President Shaylin Stephenson spoke highly about her experience at the conference.

“I’m really glad that our chapter had the opportunity to attend the conference,” said Stephenson. “Not only did I get the chance to listen to great speakers, but I gained the confidence that I am going into the right field.”

Stephenson said the trip would not have been possible without donations from Jones Public Relations in Oklahoma City, Caring Hearts for Children in Comanche, Texas, OC's Eagle PR student agency, the OC Department of Communication and the OC Student Government Association.

The following students attended: Stephenson, chapter president, Keely Clark, Treasurer Madison Hagood, Vice President Christian Franklin, Seth Copple, Seth Parker and Reese Gorman.

PRSSA is the Public Relations Student Society of America, the student version of the Public Relations Society of America. OC’s PRSSA chapter began in 2006. It is a student-led organization and is currently made up of around 20 members. OC's chapter is dedicated to creating professional connections and providing opportunities to learn about the PR industry outside of the classroom.
