"The Brew" Coffee Shop- One of a Number of Thrive Projects

Greetings from your alma mater! I must say that of all twelve months of the year, June is likely the quietest on campus. Things are happening, but not at the pace soon to come. So.......this month's news will be brief.

Now, to the news...

Front Page News! Thrive Campaign

If you saw the front page of the Oklahoman two weeks back, you know that Thrive, our unconventionally open, high-impact, 36-month campaign, is complete! All in, you gave $33.9M to strategic campus improvements and program enhancements that directly impact the student experience and student learning at OC. And, thanks to you, we didn’t use a single tuition dollar in our quest to Thrive.

We received more than 21,000 gifts and pledges from 9,307 unique donors toward 295 different campus projects in Thrive. On average, you invested $21.50 a minute in our students. Fifteen university venues (including Das Millicanhaus in Vienna) have been remodeled/remade so far during the campaign (our new dining hall will make that sixteen!). We launched three new colleges and provided start-up funding for new and enhanced degree programs in those colleges. We also launched ETHOS and expanded our spiritual life team.

During Thrive, our Backyard Club, OC’s new monthly donor program, set a record with 505 enrolled donors; and Homeward, our alumni participation program, hit a record high of 19.7%. You can read more about our campaign’s big finish on our Thrive blog, and you can see a quick video featuring our new venues on OC’s Facebook page.

Thanks for being our heroes! And watch for more from us, as we continue in our open, honest, and high-impact fundraising style.

$750 Scholarship at OC's Honors Summer Academy, July 9-14th

It's not too late!  The popular Summer Honors Academy still has a few spots open for this summer's program. Visit www.oc.edu/hsa to view courses, student testimonials, and to submit your online application.

Can you imagine: Work with a lab scientist to culture your own plate of HeLa cells for study?  Build a water propelled rocket or design a custom circuit in Engineering?  See ancient Biblical manuscripts? Be a book buddy to an under-served child? Explore the tools and technology for developing 3D digital models and environments to be used in real-time interactive media? Discover the symmetries and beauty of mathematics in ways that are not always apparent in traditional courses?  And more opportunities in other courses?

OC offers a $750 scholarship for 2 hours of transferable college credit to High School students who have just completed the 9th-11th grade!  Students can earn 2 hours of academic credit as part of HSA July 9-14.  Please contact us at 405-425-5300. More information including the application and pictures from past HSA’s can be found at http://www.oc.edu/hsa.

Children of OC alumni receive a $50 discount.

OC Hosts Retirees With New 'Golden Eagle' Program

On Thursday, May 11, President deSteiguer held the first brunch for our OC retirees to honor those who worked at the college/university for at least 10 years and ended their full-time working careers here. Over 50 'Golden Eagles' returned to campus to hear the president update them on what's happening on their campus and allow them to ask questions. Each retiree was given a special Golden Eagle lapel pin. The plan is for the president to host this group a couple of times each year. It was a great time of reuniting OC family.

Contrary to the rumor going around......Bob Stoops did NOT resign from the University of Oklahoma to start a football program at OC. We weren't interested (just kidding).

"Hymn" Tour With Jerry Rushford a Great Success!

Over 40 folks traveled England, Scotland and Ireland with President John deSteiguer, Dr. Jerry Rushford ('65) and other OC administrators as Dr. Rushford gave 'on site' background to many of our traditional church hymns.
It is possible that other trips will be planned in the future to various places. If you would like to be contacted about such trips, contact the president's office at 405-425-5104, or email: teri.mueller@oc.edu.

Next Dates for Vienna Alumni Adventure

If you have an interest in joining us on next year's Vienna Adventure, mark your calendars now for April 28-May 5, 2018.  Details for the trip will be out in the fall, but why not book your vacation time now for that trip. We'd love to have you!

Other Summer Camps

There's also still time to catch a few sessions of other summer camps on the campus, but you will have to act quick! Following is a list of those still available and how to register or get more information:

Stafford North's 'Good News' Newsletter

June Good News tells of how a veteran of World War II who had left the church had an interesting journey back and of a medical clinic who helps many and helps the church, of four different success stories from Croatia, and of how the Christian Chronicle continues to take top awards among religious papers in the US. All great stories of good news!  To reach these stories, go to www.oc.edu/goodnews.  Send story ideas and email addresses for Good News to stafford.north@oc.edu.  Be sure to forward Good News to your personal email list and to your church email list.  The more who know of Good News the better.

So, have a happy and safe July 4th celebration! Talk to you afterward.

In Him,
Bob Lashley ('74)
