Bob Lashley Giving One of His Last Speeches!

Greetings from a dramatically less populous OC campus, at least until mid-August. We've survived the 2017-18 academic year, graduated 310+ seniors at Spring Commencement a couple of weeks ago, and now look forward to a summer full of academic, church, and sports camps on campus, and hopefully running into a few of you around campus or on the highways and byways. We've also FINALLY graduated our Executive Director of Alumni Relations Bob Lashley '74 who wrote his last Eagle Excerpts last month and will sail officially into retirement at the end of this month. We will miss his leadership and the many ways he has impacted our alma mater since 1970. Enjoy your retirement Lash!

Now, to the news...

Spring Graduation 2018

Spring Commencement 2018 was Friday, April 27th and it was a beautiful, sunny, and slightly breezy day on our campus. We added over 400 new OC undergraduate and graduate alumni to our ranks that day and we can’t wait to see how these most recent alumni will succeed in their chosen endeavors. We also got to honor a couple of outstanding OC faculty who happen to be OC alumni. Dr. Brian Simmons (’87) Professor of Communications & Associate Dean for the College of Liberal Arts received this year’s Gaylord Chair of Distinguished Teaching award and Christy Hallock (’05) Assistant Professor of Nursing received the Faculty Leadership award. Here are a few photos from that day:

New OC Retirees

We’ve had some faithful and long-time OC employees recently announce their retirement. In addition to our own Bob Lashley ('74), OC’s only Head Softball Coach Tommy Heath (’71), and Vicki Wallace (’93) from our College of Biblical Studies have also announced their retirements from OC. We will miss these folks more than we realize but we are incredibly thankful for all they have done to strengthen and sustain our alma mater. Best wishes to these retirees.

Master Teacher of the Year

Dr. Gary Shreck (’62), a member of OC’s first ever class of 4-year graduates and longtime Professor of Education was recently inducted as an OC Master Teacher. Dr. Shreck served OC from Fall 1971 through Spring 2007 in OC’s Dept. of Education as a professor, chair, and dean. For 17 years in the 1980’s and 90’s Gary and his wife Paulette (Patten ’75) led students on mission trips, mostly in Hungary and Yugoslavia. The Shrecks also led the 2nd ever OC Vienna Studies trip in 1987 and continue to reunite with that group each year at OC Homecoming. Gary also served many years as a sponsor for OC clubs Outreach and Delta Gamma Sigma; a Renaissance man to be sure.. ;) It was a pleasure to have the Shreck family back on campus on Monday, April 30th to recognize Dr. Gary Shreck as an OC Master Teacher.

OC Athletics

It’s been an outstanding year for Oklahoma Christian athletics. If you’re not yet following OC Athletics on Facebook at www.facebook.com/oceagles, Twitter @OCeagles, and Instagram @OCeagles you’re missing out on some great content about OC student-athletes and their accomplishments both on and off the field. Here are a couple of recent stories about OC athletic success as this school year was wrapping up. Our Lady Eagles softball team advanced to the Heartland conference final and finished as conference runner-up, at OC Softball, and Lady Eagle golfer Kate Goodwin finished the season as NCAA DII West Super Regional Champion, at OC Golf. Congrats to these amazing athletes as well as the many other men and women who wear the OC colors proudly and compete in our name on field, court, and swimming pool. We’re thankful for the blessing all of our student-athletes are to OC.

Our own Tommy Heath ('71), was featured in the Oklahoman this past weekend for his dedication to Oklahoma Christian University.  He has been tied to OC is some capacity for over 50 years. To see the story click here.

Lashley's Last Call...

As an extremely interesting and educational parting note for all alums, I thought I would leave you with some information that will surely make you the envy of your college grad peers. It seems that the term ‘Alumni’ can be a bit confusing as to how it is used in the English language. So, here is more than you ever wanted to know about the various forms of that somewhat puzzling word.

Alum-nus – Male singular*; “He is an alumnus of OC”

Alum-ni – plural or male plural; “They are both alumni of OC”

Alum-na – female singular; “She is an alumna of OC”

Alum-nae – female plural; “Those ladies are all alumnae of OC”

Alum – slang version – male or female singular

Alums – slang version – male or female plural

*Note: The term ‘Alumnus’ is generally also accepted as ‘generic’ for male or female. Also, most universities, as does OC, recognizes former non-grad students as alumni if they completed a designated number of hours. OC’s recognition is at one semester or a minimum of 12 hours.

Those are the ‘official’ forms of the word. However, I feel that there are some other possibilities that should be considered. These would be my additions:

Alum-not – Male or female who did not complete their degree.

Alum-no – One who never went to college

Alum-gnat – one known to peers in college as totally annoying.

OK, so these may never reach circulation, but with the ‘official’ information above, you can now be extremely impressive to your peers. You’re welcome.
