Greetings, Fellow Eagles! Here we go - year 67! Though we're not sure of actual enrollment numbers until they get here, we're again hoping to hold steady or see another increase. We'll report on that in next month's newsletter. We're also very pleased to be getting enough rain, especially for August, to have the campus look pretty green for the arrival of the students starting on the 19th. For the 'umpteenth' year, the OC Greeting Gang (fac/staff/returning students) will meet arriving freshman students and families to help them move into the dorms. It's a great tradition and worth the look on the families' faces to get unexpected assistance.

Annual OC Prayer Muster

For the last 8 years or so, we have asked our alumni, literally around the world, to pause individually, gather alums from their areas, or request their home churches to have a special time of prayer for OC's school year.  We call it Prayer Muster and this year it will be Sunday, August 27th. We would love to have photos of your group, however big or small, as you gather in prayer for Oklahoma Christian, our students, faculty, and staff. If you are in a position to pray for Oklahoma Christian in your church or small groups anytime Sunday, August 27th, we would be so grateful. We look forward to adding your photos to the photos we have from past years’ Prayer Musters.

Pictured- Homecoming Alumni Banquet 2016

Homecoming November 3,4
Plans are progressing for our annual homecoming program in early November. Here are some details so far:

Musical - "Anything Goes" - a comical, family show about a stowaway on a steam ship who falls in love with a rich woman on board. The plot may sound a bit familiar, but this boat does not hit an iceberg. Showtime will be 7:30 each evening. Date in September for ticket sales will be announced in next month's Excerpts.
Banquet/Honorees - Our annual Alumni Banquet will take place at 5:30 on Friday evening, November 3. This year's honorees are:

Distinguished Alums
 - Dr. Bill Pink ('90), now President of Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, MI, and Dr. Lana Reynolds ('81), now President of Seminole State College in Seminole, OK.
Young Alum - David Bowden ('10) - David continues to make an impact on youth and adults alike with his thought-provoking Christian poetry.
Honorary - Lois Hill - Lois has been our dining room 'greeter/ID checker' for the students for many years now. Students and employees alike appreciate her pleasant and caring approach to her job.  The students all know her.
Missions - Mark and Sherrylee (Johnson '94) Woodward, architects of the impacting 'Let's Start Talking' campaigns that have introduced thousands to the Bible and enriched almost as many who have worked on those campaigns.
As is the case every year, there are so many alumni that are doing great things that it is difficult to settle on just a few, but we believe these alums are a great representation of what OC represents. Come and help us honor them. Tickets for the banquet will go on sale online in mid-September.
Special Reunions- 50-year class of 1967 with a special salute to this class at our SaturdayHomecoming Chapel. 80's Decade 'Barn Bash'- a committee gathered from that decade is meeting monthly to plan this event. 80's alums will not want to miss it! Check out the 80's Facebook page and contribute your thoughts at Facebook OCC 1980's.

Activities for all alums- Just because your year is not included in the reunions above, don't think you're not included in the weekend activities. With the alumni banquet, musical, free breakfast, chapel, basketball games, free lunch, and more, all alums will be glad they come to see old friends. Mark the date and join us!

Avanelle Baird Passes

Former OCC First Lady Avanelle Baird passed away on August 7. Much a part of Dr. James Baird's work in establishing our alma mater in the educational ranks in the 50's, 60's and early 70's, Avanelle was a formidable part of that team. A great lady of grace and faith, Avanelle will always have a significant place in OC's history.

OC's Annual Lectureship

Now under the direction of alum Grady King ('77), this year's lectureship "Engaging Faith in a Post-Truth Culture", will present challenging thoughts about how we as Christians share our faith in an ever-changing culture. The dates are Oct. 1-3.  To see a schedule of the week click here. For a look at Grady's own description of this year's program, go to oc.edu/events/lectureship.

Vision Spring 2017

Milestones/Where in the World.... - Our Homecoming version of Vision magazine will come out by mid-September. Now is the time to send in your information for our 'Milestones' section to let your classmates know about the changes in your life. New job, new baby, got married, etc. We'd like to know.  Also, if you've been traveling and have a picture of you and yours in OC gear, send it to us at alumni@oc.edu. We'll include it as well.

To see all of our Vision magazines online, go to oc.edu/alumni/vision.

College of Business Finance Lab

Another great addition to our College of Business curriculum this fall will be classes using our new Citizen's Bank Finance Lab. Equipped with live stock market 'tickers' surrounding the room and terminals for students to interact with the market will be a huge boost to our finance majors. Along with Citizen's Bank of Edmond, several alumni contributed that made this facility happen. Our deepest thanks to those committed folks.

Jeff Bennett Honored

Our own Jeff Bennett ('70), now retired from his OC work in Student Life, will be inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame on Monday, August 14, along with Heisman Trophy winner Jason White, former OSU and NBA standout Bryan 'Big Country' Reeves, and select others. This is a tremendous honor recognizing Jeff's accomplishments in track and field - most notably his finishing 4th in the Decathlon at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Ray Vaughn, Jr. ('70), on behalf of his dad and Jeff's coach, Ray Vaughn, Sr., will introduce Jeff at the ceremony.
This is a premier event in Oklahoma.  Last year's program featured Michael Jordan awarding Russell Westbrook. Congratulations Jeff!

President deSteiguer Calls for Prayer on Behalf of Charlottesville

President deSteiguer invited faculty and staff to gather in Hartman Place on Monday (August 14) morning to pray about events and attitudes related to this past weekend's happenings in Charlottesville, Virginia. The OC community prayed for healing and racial reconciliation. President deSteiguer states "God calls us to love Him and to love others. We also know that prayer is powerful and effective."

I'll 'talk' with you again next month when we are fully underway with year 67!  Be Safe!
