Apollonia Kibukayire

Apollonia

Mrs. Kibukavire's dream has always been to own her own busiess. She believed it would be most rewarding and empowering as well as allow her to contribute to the economic development of Rwanda by creating jobs. In 2006 she made the jump by opening a shop called Rwandan Heritage which offered a wide range of hand made gifts for personal and corporate purposes. Utilizing rural women, which includes genocide survivors and widows, has positively impacted both the economy and provided hope for these victims.

In 1957, Apollonia was born in Rwanda but was forced into exile due to political unrest. In 1960, Apollonia found refuge in neighboring Uganda and Kenya. She completed her primary and secondary education in Uganda. With the help of UNHCR, she later took a course in Certified Public Accounting (CPA) in Nairobi, Kenya. She has also worked for an IBM agent and Modern Business Communications.

In 1994 with the liberation war in Rwanda and the end of the genocide, Apollonia returned home to Rwanda for the first time in 30 years. She completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree course and worked in both the private and public sector, holding key positions in financial departments.

Apollonia's hope for this training is that it will arm her with business training and inspire changes that will help grow her business, add employees and continue to contribute to the Rwandan economy.

During her time in Kenya, Apollonia was married and had five wonderful children, four boys and a girl.
