The Program

When you enroll in Oklahoma Christian University’s Certification in Children’s Ministry, you have entered a program that can be completed as quickly in as 9 months or 2 years. This certification is perfect for anyone who is interested or already ministering to children and their families.  

Phase One (September 1): The first phase is accomplished through online modules that take students through 10 different topics, providing a variety of knowledge, skills, and concepts in Children’s Ministry. These modules are:  

  • Introduction to Children’s Ministry
  • Teaching Preschool Children (0-5 years)
  • Teaching Elementary Children (1st-5th grade)
  • Spiritual Development of Children
  • Volunteers and Staff in Children’s Ministry
  • Safety and Security
  • Curriculum Development for Children’s Ministry
  • Ministering to Children Across Cultures
  • Ministry to the Disabled Child
  • Connecting Children, Families and the Church

Phase Two (May Seminar): The second phase is a “Certification Seminar” held every May. It is the capstone of the program and will include collaborative student work on case studies, student projects, guest speakers, and interactive training.  

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Articulate and apply a written philosophy of ministry that involves parents and volunteers
  • Differentiate the knowledge of family issues between those that need professional care and those that do not
  • Articulate teaching methodology using age-appropriate methods, themes and elements that contributes to learning
  • Define and illustrate methods of leadership and service to families, the church and the community
  • Research and represent methods that assist parents in carrying out their God-given duty to spiritually form their children
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of learning and teaching techniques of lesson planning, organization, illustrations, stories, and multimedia
