Story: What if there was a factory that manufactured people? Karel Capek asks this question in his early twentieth-century melodrama, R.U.R., which concerns artificial workers that exhibit genuine desires and emotions. After the arrival of Helena Glory, humanitarian, libertarian and ingénue, a group of scientists and their lifelike creations go topsy-turvy with sometimes hilarious, sometimes suspenseful, results. The play also serves as a cautionary tale that speaks to the importance of preserving a spiritual foundation in an increasingly mechanized world. With moments of humor, drama and fantasy, Capek shows both the value and cost of the human soul. (Suitable for ages 12 and up)

“There was no writer like (Capek) . . . prophetic assurance mixed with surrealistic humor and hard-edged social satire: a unique combination" – Arthur Miller.
