Story: In 1938, Sylvia Gellberg has suddenly, mysteriously, become paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Phillip, is assured by their family physician, Dr. Hyman, that physically, there is nothing wrong with Sylvia and he advises that the only way to discover the cause of her paralysis is to probe into her psyche. Through this husband-wife-doctor relationship, Miller begins to peel away all the layers of the characters’ lives in this stunning, deeply effective exploration of what it means to be both American and Jewish in the days before the start of World War II. (Suitable for ages 12 and up)
“Miller’s voice, which remains as strong and unrelenting as a prophet’s, distinguishes BROKEN GLASS and gives it a poignancy so rare . . . that it’s almost new-fashioned.” – The New York Times
