The Pioneer Woman
The Pioneer Woman is immortalized in a beautiful statue
in Ponca City, Okla., erected in 1929. According to its dedicatory plaque, the statue was created “in appreciation of the heroic character of the women who braved the
dangers and endured the hardships incident to the daily life of the pioneer and homesteader in this country.” Oklahoma’s pioneer women were women of determination and
dignity and were the underpinning of any family’s success on the frontier. The Pioneer Woman was creative and made do with what she had – she made a Christmas tree from
a tumbleweed; a beautiful quilt from fabric scraps. She made a warm safe home, and taught her children to love the independent spirit this new state stood for. She would
contend with heat, dirt and strange surroundings far from home, yet survive and build. The Pioneer Woman is a figure in courage.| Sheet Music | |||
