The Oklahoma Run

On April 22nd, 1889, at high noon, in an amazing moment in history, a hush – a strange calm – was suddenly broken by a gunshot.
Thousands of people on horses, in buggies, in covered wagons and on foot rushed to stake a claim for land in Oklahoma Territory. This remarkable way to settle undeveloped land brought people
from across the nation and around the world in search of new beginnings. Within hours cities were built and hastily constructed houses became homes. The 1889 Land Run was Oklahoma’s most famous,
but Oklahoma had many runs. From 1891 to 1895 other areas were opened as the Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, Cherokee Outlet, Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Pottawatomie and Shawnee lands were all settled by runs.
The runs brought new people each year to share in this grand adventure, and in 1907 Oklahoma became a state. But it all began with “The Oklahoma Run” of ’89.
